The Centre's Story

Science Media Centre (SMC), IISER Pune was established on June 21, 2012, with generous support from the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, and IISER Pune. The Centre was founded to strengthen science communication and bridge the gap between scientific research and the public.

SMC produces high-quality media content such as science films, documentaries, research highlights, educational videos, and digital content that make complex scientific ideas accessible and engaging. In addition to content creation, the Centre conducts workshops, training programs, and outreach initiatives to build capacity in science communication among researchers, students, and media professionals. It also supports the institute’s documentation, archiving, and media production needs, playing a key role in promoting scientific awareness and engagement.

    Basil

    Technical Officer

Basil comes from an academic background in Biology. But somewhere between petri dishes, microscope and research papers, cinema had his heart.

He loves looking at science through a cinematic lens-where experiments have drama, data has character arcs, and discovery feels like a plot twist.

His mission is to communicate science to wider audiences using multimedia, storytelling, and a touch of movie magic.
